The Routines We Pretend We Have

There’s something about late August that convinces me I’m the kind of mom who thrives on structure. I start romanticizing routines like they’re part of my personality, imagining crisp mornings, tidy counters, and children who glide through the house like cooperative woodland creatures.

It’s delusional. But it’s tradition.

The Great Mudroom Reset (AKA My Annual Fantasy)

Every year, I prep the mudroom like it’s about to be photographed for a home magazine. Baskets labeled. Hooks spaced perfectly. Shoe cubbies ready for tiny sneakers. A designated “drop zone” that I swear will finally keep backpacks off the floor.

And every year, without fail, the first day of school destroys it.

Backpacks land directly in the middle of the walkway like someone dropped them from a helicopter. Shoes are flung with the enthusiasm of a confetti cannon. The hooks? Decorative. The cubbies? Ignored. The baskets? Used once, then forgotten like a New Year’s resolution.

My mudroom goes from “Pinterest‑worthy potential” to “archaeological dig site” in under 24 hours.

Morning Routines (The Version I Tell Myself Exists)

  • Wake up early

  • Make breakfast

  • Pack lunches

  • Kids dress themselves

  • Out the door on time

This version lives only in my imagination, and maybe in the homes of people who have one child and a golden retriever who listens.

Morning Routines (The Version That Actually Happens)

  • Wake up late because someone was up at 3 AM asking if bees have dreams

  • Make breakfast while refereeing an argument about who looked at who first

  • Pack lunches that will return home untouched except for one carrot stick that’s been gnawed like a woodland creature

  • Kids dress themselves in outfits that suggest they’ve lost a bet

  • Out the door eventually, with someone crying, someone missing a shoe, and someone insisting school is optional

After‑School Routines (The Fantasy)

  • Homework at the table

  • Backpacks emptied

  • Snacks portioned

  • Dinner prepped

  • Early bedtime

After‑School Routines (The Chaos Edition)

  • Homework becomes a group negotiation.

  • Backpacks remain untouched until someone says there’s a paper to sign.

  • Snacks are grabbed mid‑sprint. ignDinner is me staring into the fridge hoping inspiration appears.

  • Bedtime is a myth.

And yet… every year, I still try. I still label the baskets. I still set the alarms. I still believe, for a brief, delusional moment, that this is the year we become That Family with routines, structure, and children who listen.

But if I’m being honest, I’m mostly just out here surviving, improvising, and laughing at myself for pretending I run a tight ship when I’m really the captain of a very enthusiastic, very loud, very unpredictable pirate crew.

Routines? Sure. Do we follow them? Absolutely not. Will I keep pretending we do? Without hesitation.

Because that’s the real back‑to‑school chaos, the beautiful, ridiculous dance between what we plan and what actually happens. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
